True charity is the desire to be useful to others with no thought of recompense.
CFSC is fortunate to have great volunteers who tirelessly serve our Church in so many ways. It is our people who make our community the accepting and compassionate place it is.
Among our volunteers are our Ministers and Mediums. From running services and development circles, to organizing events and workshops, to serving on the Board and committees, these individuals are truly the pillars of our Spiritual community.
They also offer private healing and mediumship readings on request. Please take a look at their bios below to see what extraordinary individuals they are!
If you would like to book an appointment with a Church Medium, please email the Church.
Jade Soetaert has been involved in mediumship and CFSC for over five years. Along with Rev. William and Sharon Pelech, Jade has recently formed another Spiritualist Center in Lethbridge called The Eternity Connection. Jade says that 10 years ago she would never have expected to join any church, but it is a life changing experience and so much fun. Since Jade lives on an acreage in Stavely, AB, she now commutes frequently to both Spiritualist churches in Lethbridge and Calgary.
Jade has always been very intuitive from a young age. She knew things about people who had passed into Spirit without ever really knowing them on the earth plane. In 2011 she started to hear a voice say: “Be still and be quiet.” So she started to do just that, be still and be quiet. Her meditation began to evolve. She had a vivid memory of being in her Mom and Dad’s house back in the 1970’s and seeing two unhappy men floating in the room. Jade’s sister could not see them, but both girls were frightened by the idea of ghosts. One of the Spirits lay down inside Jade’s body and she immediately knew all about him with many vivid details. When she shared this experience with her Mother, it was confirmed that the spirit was her Mother’s father, Jade’s maternal grandfather.
From the point of that memory onward, Jade continued to sit and be still, but she meditated more with purpose. The word ‘medium’ came through, and she had to ‘google’ its meaning. Although Jade is extremely busy and works every weekend running the kitchen at the Claresholm Agriplex, amazingly her schedule opened up for a weekend workshop with Helen Campbell in Cochrane, AB. She had wonderful experiences in the mediumship workshop and received information on how to become a medium. She also got a brochure about CFSC. Then amazingly her schedule opened up again on a weekend that Rev. Ella was teaching her Orientation Course In Modern Spiritualism, and again Jade’s time was freed up to attend Donna Kiss’ Introduction to Mediumship. From that point onward, Jade became fully committed to mediumship and Spiritualism.
Jade has made volunteering for the two churches her priority. She believes strongly in volunteer work and giving back to the community. Right now Jade facilitates Retreats. She just gave a 3 day Retreat in Sedona which included meditation and hiking in the high energy vortexes that are found there at sacred sites. She and her husband give personal development Retreats in Stavely as well. Jade will be doing another one in Lethbridge in conjunction with Bruce Manaka, a former monk living in California, who is extraordinarily grounded. Jade and Bruce will be holding a Crystal Singing Bowls Healing session on the evening of March 15 (see poster and newsletter) at CFSC. She will be bringing her wonderful Owl Wings & Talons that are able to help people release pent up energy.
Jade’s intention is to raise consciousness in whatever way she can!
Reverend Dr. William Pelech
Rev. Dr. William Pelech originally became interested in Spiritualism in the 1970s when he attended various Spiritualist churches in the Vancouver area. He was drawn to Spiritualism because it offered more than faith in an afterlife—actual evidence of our essential nature as Spirit beings. He was intrigued by the evidence offered by Church mediums and was later convinced of the truth of Spiritualism when he experienced communication from Spirit as a developing medium.
Upon moving to Calgary in 1999, William became actively involved here at CFSC. His mediumship development progressed under the guidance of Rev. David Oliver, leading to his demonstrating Spirit communication at Church services. Over the years he has given over 140 public demonstrations and over 20 lectures at CFSC. He has also become a certified ASHA spiritual healer. In addition, he has also attended 15 courses focusing on mediumship at Arthur Findlay College in Stansted, England and has demonstrated as a visiting medium at the Lilydale Spiritualist Community in New York state. He currently offers private readings on weekends by donation only.
In addition to serving as a Church Medium, circle leader and spiritual healer, William has served on the CFSC Board for many years and held the offices of President, Vice-President and Treasurer. He is also a full professor at the University of Calgary, a parent, a grandparent and a husband.
William believes that one of the greatest gifts given to the world by Spiritualism is releasing humanity from the illusion of death. For if one is not afraid of death, what is there truly to be afraid of in this world? Further, he has come to realize how the power of Spirit transforms our lives—offering guidance and profoundly shifting our perspectives on our world and our essential nature.
Reverend Ella Groves
Rev. Ella Groves has a long history with Calgary First Spiritualist Church. Her family found their way to Spiritualism in the late 1930s. As a child, Rev. Ella attended the Children’s Progressive Lyceum, which was the equivalent of a Sunday school for our Church. She was brought up with the idea that Spirit is always around us and that our purpose here in life is to progress our souls by being of service to others.
Rev. Ella attended the University of Alberta. After completing her Bachelor of Education degree, she taught elementary classes in the public school systems in Alberta and British Columbia. Later, she continued her studies at the University of Calgary where she specialized as a reading clinician, and then taught students with learning problems for 20 years.
After completing extensive studies in all aspects of Spiritualism through the American-based Morris Pratt Institute (Course in Modern Spiritualism, Pastoral Skills Training and Educational Course of Licentiate Minister), and receiving certification in mediumship, healing and lecturing from the Spiritualist Church of Canada, Rev. Ella was ordained as a Minister of the Spiritualist Church of Canada in 2007. Ella continues to play an active role in the life and work of CFSC.
Reverend Jane Fleming
As a child Rev. Jane attended the Children’s Progressive Lyceum, which was the equivalent of a Sunday school for our Church. Little did she realize that one day she would follow in the footsteps of some of the amazing Spiritualist mediums, healers, teachers and ministers that she met during her childhood.
Rev. Jane trained in Speech Arts and Drama, and earned diplomas from the Mount Royal College Conservatory, the Royal Conservatory of Music (University of Toronto) and Trinity College, England. She went on to become an outstanding teacher of speech arts and drama for 36 years at Mount Royal College Conservatory and served as a speech and communication assistant to Professor Rev. Laura Muir at the University of Calgary. She received a distinguished teaching award in 1987 and retired from the College in 2000, only to begin a new career in Spiritualism.
Rev. Jane has served as President of the Association of Spiritual Healers of Alberta (ASHA) for many years and is a trainer and coach for Spiritual Healing courses. She went on to develop her mediumship and serves as a platform medium. In 2014 she was ordained as a minister of the Spiritualist Church of Canada. Her ministerial duties include platform mediumship, conducting worship services, preparing lectures, officiating at weddings, funerals and naming ceremonies, and doing private readings and healings.
Spirit Medium Donna Kiss
Donna has been practicing mediumship and clairvoyance in Calgary since 1989. She started at the Gateway Centre and a few years later expanded to Calgary First Spiritualist Church. Donna has taken various workshops and courses on the psychic arts, including seven courses on different styles of mediumship and psychic work at Arthur Findlay College in England. She has also attended The Monroe Institute in Virginia, having taken the 27 Gateway, Lifelines and Exploration courses there.
Donna uses crystals and stones to assist with psychic readings; however her source of information is through clairvoyance. The method is to have the person pick out a stone and then Donna uses her clairvoyance to assist Spirit friends to come in contact and give messages to the person through that particular stone. Because Spirit is called upon, fortune telling is not involved. A person can express questions and concerns, and answers and guidance will be given, provided that this will not harm a person's growth or karma.
At the present time Donna gives demonstrations of clairvoyance and teaches at Calgary First Spiritualist Church and the Gateway Centre. Although Donna only does in-person readings, people from around the world have come to see her. Donna offers consultations on almost any subject—from your past lives to your future in this life and information on your family and friends, both on Earth and in Spirit.
Spirit Medium Louise Gebhart
Louise Gebhart is a spirit medium who has been involved with CFSC for many years. She teaches the advanced mediumship development circle and sits on the Mediumship Development Committee. She is a fantastic mentor to our developing mediums, always helping them advance with their abilities.
When you see Louise on platform at one of our Church services, you might notice that she often receives messages from Spirit in the form of rhymes and songs. Louise also practices the art of dowsing, i.e., using pendulums and rods to receive information from Spirit. Louise is also experienced in performing house clearings and blessings.
Spirit Medium Vreny Zumbuhl
Vreny has been working with Spirit as an evidential medium for a number of years. She is very passionate about her work, which she feels strongly supports people’s ability to heal and move forward on their life journeys.
Vreny is a Church Medium at Calgary First Spiritualist Church where she volunteers endless hours of her time. She also volunteers at the Gateway Centre as a platform medium and reader at fundraiser events. In September 2015, Vreny was invited to be the visiting medium at the Ottawa Spiritual Pathways Centre where she offered private readings, demonstrations of mediumship and a one-day workshop on developing mediumistic and psychic abilities.
Vreny offers workshops at her home in the Irricana area outside of Calgary and at CFSC. She also runs private development circles both in Calgary and at her home where she engages participants in a variety of trust-building exercises to help them enhance their psychic and mediumistic abilities. Her gentle and encouraging approach to teaching helps participants unfold their abilities easily and effortlessly. Vreny also offers private readings in person or via telephone.
